Washington DC + 1.1.2003

We drove for what seemed like a day to get from NYC to Washington DC. But just as always God provided completely and placed our vehicle in the place that He wanted. We drove through rain for most of the trip, but it seemed to be pretty light. When we arrived in DC it was raining fairly hard. We cut the cross into four pieces which were fastened together by holes drilled and a 1/4" bolt holding them tight. After we had taken about 20 steps with the assembled cross, the bottom piece fell off. We had purchased some duck tape in NYC so we decided to use the rest to hold the cross together. We used it all, and the piece wouldn't even budge.

We then made our way to the White House, which was a short distance from where we were parked. We weren't sure exactly where we were going so we stopped to look at a map and determine where to go. It was at that point that a security guard questioned what we were doing. He told us, "I wondered what that was you were carrying, and then I realized it was a crucifix." This is a perfect example of what happens. People look and then see what it is: a cross. It is perfectly clear what we are carrying. We proceeded to walk infront of the White House, although the closest we were able to get was about 300 yards. It was a bit disappointing that the weather was so bad because not many people were outside, but that just reminded us more and more that God has specific people picked out to see the cross.

From the White House we proceeded to the Washington Memorial and then on down to the Capitol Building. It was getting dark fast so we hurried up to get to the Capitol. Once at the Capitol, we walked up the lower tier of steps and onto the level which was below the ground level for the Capitol. We stopped there because no closer access was permitted. We decided to stop and pray for our nation. The three of us got in a circle and prayed. It seemed that as time went along the rain intensified, which seemed like God was pouring oout on us. It was some of the most intense prayer time that either of the three of us had experienced. After we finished praying we lingered on the tier for a few minutes. Then a police officer approached us on a bike and stopped us to question what we were doing. A few minutes later several other officers arrived and split us up to determine if we were telling the truth about our "carrying the cross" mission. This provided a great opportunity for us to share the gospel with the officers.

It is so funny how God provides opportunities to share. Not that we should just sit around and wait, but that we should always be looking for Him to provide and open the door. After they realized that we were harmless they let us go and we left the Capitol. We walked back to the car carrying the cross. When we were about 30 yards from the car the bottom piece of the cross slipped out of the duck tape that was holding it together because it got so wet. Then we realized that the duck tape wasn't holding the cross together, IT WAS GOD! God has far more to do with our every day lives than we think. So once again God rocked our world while we carried the cross.
