New York City + 12.30.2003 - 12.31.2003

After a straight 24 hour drive we finally made it to NYC. Everything about getting to NYC made it evident that God wanted us there. Just the fact that we found our destination was a miracle. We finished up the 30th by touring the city via subway. The next day, the 31st, we got up ready to fight for Jesus. Around mid morning we took to the streets of Manhattan with the cross. We started walking with the cross around the lower part. After walking for about half an hour we made it to Ground Zero. Getting there was quite interesting because it seemed like every person had to take a picture of the man carrying the cross. While one was carrying the cross, the other two were praying, reading scripture out loud, and singing songs of praise to our King. Once at Ground Zero, we felt like we were supposed to stay there, so we did. There is a memorial set up on a fence surrounding the site, and the memorial attracted hundreds of people every few minutes. That is where we stood with the cross. One was holding the cross with a brother on each side. One was reading scriptures loud so the crowd could hear the Word of God. Scriptures we have found good to read have been Romans 8, Philippians 2, Luke 16, Colossians 1, 1 John 1, and a few other chapters. While we were there we received numerous Christians who came up to us and offered encouragement. One group took us aside and prayed for us. Other groups proclaimed their excitement and joined us in rejoicing in our Lord Jesus. Some people approached us to inquire about what we were doing. One of the neatest things about being in NYC is the number of police officers that asked us what we were doing. One officer told us, "It isn't every day that you see a person carrying a cross around." This shouldn't be. People all over the nation should be carrying crosses to serve as a reminder of Jesus Christ, the one and only Savior.

After leaving Ground Zero, we took the cross on the subway and walked to the Staten Island ferry. We then proceded to walk the streets of NYC with the cross, from the lower part toward Times Square. We walked for a few hours and then went to Times Square to take the cross to the New Years Eve festivities. We were in Times Square for about 30 minutes and the police officers demanded that we leave the area. It was a safety factor, nothing prejudiced. We were disappointed because we had driven from Kansas City, over 1200 miles to be there. Then we realized God had bigger plans than we did. Walking down the street to the subway station we encountered three teens. They were polite enough to give us a second so we explained the gospel to them, and that Jesus is the only way to heaven. Seeds were planted with these teens and it is only a matter of time before they will understand the magnitude of the grace they can receive. Once again the cross does more than we could ever imagine.
